This Mooncake Bleeds Gold

by Na Kika 18 Sep 2026

Anyone who lives in New York knows how short fall is here.

So when the forecast said Saturday would be sunny, 72, and breezy, we didn’t hesitate—we grabbed a picnic blanket, a few little cushions, picked up that heavy gold gift box, and headed straight to Brooklyn Bridge Park.

You know the spot. That lawn at Pier 1, with the Manhattan skyline on your left, the bridge cables curving overhead, and the East River wind blowing away the whole summer’s muggy heat. The park allows outside food, which mattered—because we weren’t packing ordinary sandwiches.

ONE

We were packing a whole box of moons

More precisely, the Amalee Hairy Crab Roe Lava Mooncakes, 8-Piece Limited-Edition Gift Box.

The moment we opened it, people nearby drifted over.

Gold. The first thing you see is gold.

Not tacky, blinding gold—but warm, mellow gold, like 4 p.m. autumn sunlight hitting fallen leaves. The geometric patterns on the box lid are arranged with rhythm, dotted with starbursts in the center—stare long enough and it starts to look like some ancient star chart, or the New York night sky, rearranged.

A guy walking his dog stopped and asked, “What is that?”

I said, “Cut it open and you’ll see.”

I took out the first one—“Super Claw.” The name is pretty on the nose, right? The mooncake is shaped like a symmetrical crab, both claws raised, like it’s saying, “Come at me.” I cut into it with the little plastic knife that came with it—

The lava poured out.

Crab roe lava—thick, golden-orange—spilled down the cut side, leaving an arc across the white flaky crust. How do I describe that image? It was like someone cut open a full moon and let the moonlight pour out.

The guy said, “Whoa.”

I said, “Yep.”

TWO

Eight Mooncakes, Eight Little Surprises

What makes this box fun is that it isn’t one flavor copied eight times. Each one has its own name and personality:

Super Claw — classic crab roe lava, salty and direct, like a New York greeting that gets straight to the point.

Claw Galore — even more crab roe when you bite in; for people who think you can never have too much of a good thing.

Claw for Life — a pun, but Americans can get it too: rich and free for life—who doesn’t want that?

Rich as Shell — a bold name, and the flavor is just as heavy; this is where the black truffle version lives.

Claw-sperous Future — the claw version of “a bright future”; good luck whether you gift it or keep it.

Thank Crab It’s You — Thanksgiving isn’t here yet, but this mooncake already says everything for you.

Fortune from All Sides — the most wealth-attracting one in the box; perfect for the cash register (joking, but you get it).

Claw and Leisure — my favorite. The name is the ultimate life goal.

There are two flavors: Hairy Crab Roe Lava and Hairy Crab Black Truffle Crab Roe Lava. The first is pure salty-savory; the second adds an earthy layer of black truffle, like crab roe wearing a velvet jacket.

THREE

Eastern Mystique, Translated for New York

To Americans, mooncakes have always had a bit of a “mysterious East” thing going on. Round, stamped with characters, filled when you cut them open—like an encrypted message from an ancient civilization.

But this box doesn’t ask you to decode anything.

Crab-shaped cakes? That’s the Chinese pun where “claw” sounds like “money.” Chinese people have been playing with it for centuries. Now you can play too. The gold color scheme? Harvest, preciousness, holiday gifting—exactly what Americans intuitively read into gold packaging. The geometric patterns and starbursts underneath? You can call them Eastern tradition, or Eastern modern aesthetics—decorative within order, restrained within decoration.

The moment you cut it open and the lava pours out, no cultural background is needed to understand: this is good stuff. Eat it now.

FOUR

At Brooklyn Bridge Park, We Ate Away the Whole Afternoon

Back on the lawn.

We cut open all eight mooncakes and laid them out on the picnic blanket like a platter of moons. Next to them were supermarket cheese, grapes, and a bottle of white wine (the park allows drinking if you’re 21+, but remember: no glass cups).

The wind blew in off the river, and Manhattan’s buildings turned gold in the sunset—same shade as the mooncake box.

The dog-walking guy passed by again later, this time with a friend. His friend asked, “Is this that lava moon you were talking about?”

I said, “Yep. Want to try one?”

He tried “Fortune from All Sides.” He took a bite, went quiet for three seconds, and said, “I need this in my life.”

I said, “Limited edition. Once it’s gone, it’s gone.”

He said, “Where?”

I said, “Amalee.”

So, One Thing You Should Do This Fall

If you’re in New York—or any city where fall is too short not to take seriously—

Pick a sunny day, grab a picnic blanket, a few little cushions, and a box of Amalee Hairy Crab Roe Lava Mooncakes, and head to Brooklyn Bridge Park.

The park allows outside food. All you have to do is find a good spot and cut open a moon.

The crab roe will spill out. People nearby will drift over. You’ll become “the person who brought the mysterious Eastern good stuff to the picnic.”

Eight mooncakes, eight auspicious puns. Limited edition. No restock.

This fall, don’t just post a picture of the sky. Bring a box of moons to a picnic and let the lava speak for you.

Brooklyn Bridge Park Picnic Tips: The lawn at Pier 1 has the best views; the park allows outside food and drinks in non-glass containers; after 6 p.m., the light is the most photogenic.
